Graffiti — What It Is & How It's Removed
Aerosol, marker, paint and etching — all different problems with different solutions. What determines the outcome isn't the tag, it's the surface it's on and how long it's been there.
Graffiti is the contaminant we're named after and the one we deal with every day, and the single most useful thing to understand about it is that the tag itself is rarely what determines the job. Two identical tags — same paint, same size, same day — can be a fifteen-minute job on a steel shutter and a two-visit poultice job on a sandstone wall three metres away.
What matters is porosity. On a non-porous surface the paint sits on top and comes off completely. On a porous one it soaks in, and removal becomes a question of drawing pigment back out of the material rather than cleaning something off it.
The types, and why they behave differently
Aerosol is the overwhelming majority. It's applied as a fine mist under pressure, which is close to ideal for penetrating a porous surface, and modern aerosols use tough acrylic and enamel binders. It responds to solvent-based removers matched to the binder.
Marker pen and dye-based ink looks like the easier problem and often isn't. Dyes are soluble and travel further into a porous surface than pigment does, and they can bleed back out over the following weeks — a wall that looked clean can ghost again. Marker on porous stone usually needs a poultice.
Thrown paint — emulsion or gloss from a tin or bottle — sits thicker and is often easier to remove because it hasn't atomised into the surface. Bituminous and industrial paints are the exception and need specific solvents.
Scratching and acid etching isn't a coating at all. It's physical damage to the material, mostly on glass and polished metal, and no cleaning method removes it. That's a replacement, or an anti-graffiti film so the next attack is a film swap.
Speed genuinely matters. A tag removed within a week is a straightforward job; the same tag after six months of UV exposure has cured harder and driven deeper, and costs considerably more to remove. Rapid response isn't just about appearances.
Why some graffiti leaves a shadow
It's the question we're asked most, and the answer is almost always porosity plus time. On sandstone, soft brick, textured concrete and unsealed timber the pigment sits below the surface. A remover dissolves the binder and flushes most of it back out, but the finest particles lodged deepest can stay put.
The wrong response to a shadow is to escalate — more pressure, harsher chemicals, an abrasive. That removes the shadow by removing the surface, leaving a lightened, recessed patch that's permanent and reads as damage from across the street. We've been called to fix a great many of those, and they're worse than the tag.
The right response is a poultice: an absorbent paste that sits on the surface for hours or days and draws the residual pigment upwards as it dries. Repeated applications keep pulling it out. It's slow, and occasionally a very faint trace remains — particularly reds and purples on pale stone — but the material is intact.

Removal by surface, in short
- Metal — usually complete removal; the care is in not stripping the powder coating
- Glass — paint comes off perfectly; scratching and etching cannot be cleaned
- Brick — good results, though soft Victorian brick may need a poultice
- Stone — the hardest; slow chemical work, occasionally a faint ghost remains
- Concrete — depends entirely on the finish; smooth is good, exposed aggregate is difficult
- Render — often ends in repainting the elevation; test first
- Plastic — good, but only with plastic-safe products or it crazes
Offensive graffiti and why it's treated differently
Racist, homophobic, sectarian and sexually explicit graffiti is not the same problem as a tag, and it shouldn't sit in the same queue. It causes real harm to the people who have to walk past it, and for a council, school, housing provider or transport operator it's a public-facing failure every hour it remains.
We prioritise it, and we'd always rather be called immediately than added to a scheduled visit. Where full removal will take longer — a poultice job on stone, for instance — the sensible first step is often to obscure it the same day and return to remove it properly.

Stopping it coming back
Some walls get hit repeatedly, and cleaning them reactively forever is the most expensive option available. Three things genuinely reduce recurrence.
Speed. Graffiti attracts graffiti — a tag left up is read as evidence that nobody is looking. Sites cleaned within days of an incident are hit measurably less than sites cleaned monthly.
Coatings. On repeat-target walls a sacrificial or permanent coating means the next tag comes off with hot water and no chemicals, turning a specialist visit into a routine wash-down. On a wall hit three or four times a year it pays for itself quickly.
Environment. Lighting, planting, sightlines and removing the sheltered spot all reduce the appeal of a location. We're not landscape architects, but we see a lot of walls, and we'll say when we think the site itself is the problem.

- Existing graffiti left in place, which signals a site isn't being watched
- Proximity to routes taggers use regularly — railway lines, canal paths, ginnels

Can all graffiti be removed?
Almost all paint-based graffiti can be removed, though on very porous surfaces like sandstone a faint shadow occasionally remains. What can't be removed is scratched or acid-etched tagging, because that's physical damage to the material rather than a coating on it — that needs replacement or overpainting.
How quickly should graffiti be removed?
As fast as practical, for two reasons. Fresh paint is far easier to remove than paint that's been curing in UV for months, so it costs less. And visible graffiti attracts more graffiti — sites cleaned quickly get targeted less. Anything offensive should be dealt with the same day, even if that means obscuring it first and removing it properly afterwards.
Will removing graffiti damage the wall?
Not when the method is matched to the surface. Damage comes from using pressure or abrasives on materials that can't take them — which is how you get a lightened, recessed patch that's more permanent than the tag. We identify the surface, test on a discreet area and use the gentlest method that will actually work.
Should I try to remove graffiti myself?
On a painted metal shutter with a proper graffiti wipe, possibly. On brick, stone, render or concrete we'd advise against it — most DIY attempts use pressure or abrasion and leave a bright, damaged patch that's harder and more expensive to put right than the original tag. Cleaning up a failed attempt is consistently the more difficult job.
