Graffiti Removal for Schools & Academy Trusts

Graffiti at a school is not treated the same way as graffiti on a boundary wall elsewhere, and it should not be. Content that is racist, sexual, threatening or naming a pupil creates a safeguarding issue the moment it appears, and the expectation on the school is to deal with it immediately rather than add it to a maintenance list. The practical difficulty is that it is nearly always discovered at the worst possible time — by a caretaker at seven in the morning, an hour before the gates open.

Why speed matters more here

In most settings, graffiti left up for a few days is an appearance problem. On a school site it is a wellbeing one. Content targeting an individual pupil or a group can cause real distress and undermine a lot of pastoral work very quickly, and if it stays up it starts to look as though the school does not consider it worth removing. Parents notice too, and a photograph of an offensive tag on a school wall travels a long way on a local social media group.

There is also a practical deterrence argument. Sites where graffiti is removed immediately and completely attract markedly less of it over time, because the reward for doing it disappears. Schools that tolerate a few weeks of turnaround tend to find the same walls targeted repeatedly, which costs far more across a year than dealing with each incident straight away.

Working around the school day

Our strong preference, and usually the school's, is to be off site before pupils arrive. Early-morning attendance deals with most incidents, and weekends and holiday periods suit larger jobs like a full playground clean or treating a run of walls with a protective coating. Working outside operating hours removes the safeguarding complication of contractors moving around a live site, avoids noise and water near classrooms, and means the site simply looks right when everyone arrives.

What we deal with on school sites

School estates present a mix of surfaces, many of them in constant contact with children, which narrows what is appropriate to use:

• Graffiti removal from brickwork, cladding, render, doors, bin stores and outbuildings.
• Moss and algae treatment on paths, playgrounds and steps where slip risk is a genuine safety concern.
• Playground and hard-surface cleaning including play equipment, markings and covered areas.
• Anti-graffiti coatings on the walls, sheds and perimeter surfaces that are targeted again and again.

Working across a trust

Academy trusts running several schools face the same issue as any multi-site organisation: standards drift when each site sources its own contractor. A single arrangement across the trust gives you one rate card, one point of contact and consistent evidence, and it means a school with a problem at seven in the morning is not trying to find someone from scratch. Central reporting also shows which sites generate repeat incidents, which is usually where a coating or a lighting change pays for itself.
